Kung Fu for Women's Self Defense in Calgary
|
It’s unfortunate, but it’s true: as a woman in a big city like Calgary, you’ve most likely walked around with a little bit of fear in the back of your mind – often at night, but maybe even during the day, too. And if you’ve ever found yourself in a dangerous situation, you may already know that it’s usually not practical or possible to use a weapon for self-defense. You can’t predict when such a situation will occur, and what you’ll have available nearby. That means that the best thing to do is prepare with the tools you know will always be there, ready to deploy: your hands and your mind.
Practicing a martial art like kung fu in Calgary is not just a great method of self-defense for many situations, but also an excellent way to get a workout and achieve better fitness in the process. You can build self-confidence as you gain new knowledge and master new defensive styles, all while meeting others with the same mindset and goals as yourself. An important thing to know about those goals is that aggression and attacks are not what we aim for. Our techniques are meant to eliminate danger, primarily, using the least amount of damage possible – which is common to all martial arts when used for self-defense. Growing that discipline is an ideal and important part of the lessons, and it’s what our classes teach in every session. |
What do you learn in Women's Self Defence Class?
1. Situational awareness: We always start with discussions and lessons on how to become more aware of your own surroundings, and how you can improve your ability to interpret the environment around you. Using physical barriers, smart movements, and well-thought-out plans can help you not only escape danger, but avoid getting into it in the first place.
2. De-escalation: Even if confronted, all other forms of non-violence should be attempted before resorting to a physical altercation. Of course, this may not be possible in every situation, but learning how to properly reduce the danger and tension is an important part of our classes. It relies on human psychology and understanding behavioural tendencies to create more favourable outcomes.
3. Body language and speaking with authority: Learning how to stand and speak assertively, to hold your ground against a belligerent person, and to establish yourself as an unwise target is also crucial to any self-defense strategy.
4. Dealing with weapons: If a worst-case scenario happens and your attacker brandishes a weapon, we offer training and guidance on how to react appropriately to different weapon types. The key is damage reduction and escape, not to try and attack out of turn.
5. Deflecting attacks: Of course, as a martial arts strategy, we will teach you how to deflect attacks, redirect punches and kicks, escape tackles or pursuits, and many other tactics that would be used as a last resort in an extreme situation.
The most important aspect of this is not simply protecting yourself, but preventing yourself from being caught in such situations in the first place. So when you’re ready to take the next step and feel your confidence and your capabilities growing, let us know and we’ll be happy to help you get there!
